Examples of Mantua Projects

Just about every model railroader who's been around a while has become well acquainted with Mantua at some point in their past.  This line has been around since the late 30's and provided many of the early modelers an opportunity to enjoy the hobby at an affordable price.

Mantua's co-founder, John W. Tyler, was a modeler at heart and played a big part in bringing HO into everyday homes.  He had a vision to simplify the difficult task of scratch-building each model.  His kits were a clear indication of this with easy instructions and basic components that would quickly make a masterpiece for any layout.

Mantua's early locomotives were made of brass and cast parts, and proved to be fine models that would give years of enjoyment.  Many of these models are still available through auctions, 2nd hand stores, or similar means if one looks for them.  We have restored dozens of these locos for owners that desire to remember the by-gone days of the hobby or have inherited a family heirloom.  We have many of the parts on hand to restore these back to their original glory.

When Tyler introduced the newer version of the 2-8-2 Mikado, as well as the 4-6-2 Pacific, modelers nation-wide turned their attention to these "better breeds" of models in an effort to upgrade their pikes.  These die-cast locos boasted the "power-drive" gear boxes and large Pittman motors.  They ran very smoothly with plenty of power to pull large consists.  The replaceable brass bearings and easily serviceable mechanisms kept these models going for years.

The company also introduced a complete line of smaller locomotives to fit just about every situation.  Modelers could choose between  the small 0-4-0 or 0-6-0  boosters, 0-4-0 or 0-6-0 switchers, 0-4-0 Pony, or 2-6-2 Prairie.  Hundreds of these locos are still in action today and running strong.

During the past 40 years, I've had the opportunity to work on all of the different types of  TYCO/Mantua locomotives produced.  My very first locomotive was the Mantua 0-4-0 switcher.  I disassembled and reassembled that little guy dozens of times during the next few years.  I began my customizing at an early age by mounting a John English "Yardbird" switcher on that Mantua mechanism.  From there I moved on to the larger locos and began detailing and customizing them.  I've had an interest in this line ever since and have attempted to assist other modelers who share the same interests.

At Yardbird Classic Trains, our desire is to keep your TYCO/Mantua locomotives and rolling stock running like new to pass on to the next generation of model RR'ers.

We also provide a variety of custom work on Mantua locomotives.  Our services range from detailing to custom painting, lettering, and weathering.  Mantua Cab forward conversions are one of our specialties.  The smooth running Mantua mechanisms make a great running locomotive and custom details add realism without the expensive costs of a brass model.
