I remember seeing those old Roundhouse boxes on my father's shelf in the basement where he kept his small stash of rolling stock. They were well-built kits of the day and proved to be quality components of almost every railroad pike going. The locomotives were all die cast and fairly easy to assemble. When finished, they added some distinctive features to any layout. MDC (Model Die-Casting) Roundhouse began its model building in the early 50's and has been a hallmark of model railroaders up to this day. Other than a few minor changes, they have been manufacturing under their name for about 50 years. In fact, I just received news that MDC Roundhouse was purchased by Horizon Hobbies this year. That represents a long history of serving the model railroad industry. One of the first locomotives the Roundhouse manufactured was their 0-6-0 switcher engine and tender. It was accurately designed after the popular Southern Pacific yard switcher seen throughout the west. They also made an 0-6-0 tank engine called the "Yard Goat" that was a big hit. It was the companies answer for Gordon Varney's "Lil' Joe" switcher. Roundhouse added an all metal version of the 2-6-2 Prairie loco, as well as a 4-4-2 Atlantic. Both of these locos came with easy-to-install details and boasted full valve gearing (which was not so easy to install). They both made very impressive models of the famous prototypes. As time went by, the line was expanded to include some Pennsy models, including a consolidation and Atlantic with the Belpaire fireboxes. They later introduced both a 2 and 3 truck shay for the loggers in our hobby, as well as the slow-running "Climax". The company also introduced a complete line of smaller locomotives to fit just about every situation. Modelers could choose between the small 0-4-0 or 0-6-0 boosters, 0-4-0 or 0-6-0 switchers, 0-4-0 Pony, or 2-6-2 Prairie. Hundreds of these locos are still in action today nd running strong. While we don't have a huge abundance of MDC Roundhouse locos and parts on hand, we do carry some of the common replacement items. We have restored several of the early Roundhouse models for collectors and modelers alike. It is important to acknowledge the role that Roundhouse played in the early days of HO, and during the past 50 years, in furthering the hobby. Vintage Roundhouse repair and restoration |
